Ma Lin attends the 8th member congress of Beijing Science and Technology Popularization Creation Association

On the afternoon of March 26, 2021, the 8th member congress of Beijing Science and Technology Popularization Creation Association took place at Beijing Science Center. CAS academician and researcher of National Astronomical Observatories of CAS Wu Xiangping and Secretary of Leading Party Members’ Group of Beijing Association for Science and Technology Ma Lin attended the meeting and delivered speeches. Class-2 inspector of BAST Chen Weicheng participated in this conference. Deputy Secretary of Party Committee of CAS Institute of Microbiology Shi Shuo and Vice President of the 7th council of Beijing Science and Technology Popularization Creation Association and Curator of Beijing Museum of Natural History Meng Qingjin participated in and hosted the corresponding meetings. Over 170 member representatives the association and honored guests attended the conference.

The conference deliberated and passed the work report, financial report of the 7th council, audit report, supervisory board’s work report and the Articles of Association of Beijing Science and Technology Popularization Creation Association (draft), voted through the “Membership Dues Standards and Management Measures” of the association, and elected members of the 8th leadership organization, council and supervisory board. Wu Xiangping was elected the president, 6 other individuals including Shi Shuo were elected vice presidents, Fu Mengmeng was elected secretary general, and Zhang Yongfeng was elected chief supervisor. Meanwhile, the conference voted through the list of Party construction work group and list of deputy secretaries of general of the association.

During the conference, the new president of the association Wu Xiangping presented certificates of honor to representative members of the 7th council and representative supervisors on behalf of the 8th council.

Wu Xiangping said in his speech that the new council will, under the leadership of BAST and the joint efforts of all members, continue to be guided by Xi Jinping’s thoughts on socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, remain as “effective writers”, strengthen their ideological and political guidance; build up the “brand image” and promote the prosperous development of the cause of science popularization writing in the capital city; serve as competent “stewards”, advance the scientific and normative construction of the association, bring the association’s work to the next level and make renewed contributions to promoting the prosperity of science popularization writing and improvement of civic science literacy in the capital city.

Ma Lin raised four-point opinions and suggestions for the work of the 8th council on behalf of BAST: first, seriously study the spirit of important speeches of General Secretary Xi Jinping to effectively increase their sense of purpose and responsibility. Second, energetically advance the prosperity of science popularization writing in the capital city by focusing on upgrading science popularization concepts and practices. Third, focus on the business-like academic practices and continuously intensify the efforts to identify and cultivate talented writers of science popularization. Fourth, stick to acting under the guidance of Party construction and endeavor to improve the association’s capabilities and performance of self construction. He expected the association to further emancipate their minds, gather intellectual efforts, work innovatively and solidly, endeavor to write new chapters of prosperous science popularization writing in the capital city and make new, greater contributions to achieving leapfrog improvement of civic science literacy in the capital city and constructing Beijing as an international sci-tech innovation center.

Beijing Science and Technology Popularization Creation Association, founded in 1978, is the earliest civil organization specialized in science popularization in Beijing, now with 418 members. Over the past 43 years, under the leadership of past presidents such as Mao Yisheng, Qiu Chunlin, Han Zuoli, Zhang Kaixun, Zhou Lijun and Kang Le, the association has always been playing an important role in prospering the cause of science popularization creation and advancing the science literacy improvement across the society.
