Call to Action for “Self Reliance and Innovation Contest“

As a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation advance rapidly, the world’s game changer never seen before in the past century is evolving at a quickened pace. Never has been science and technology profoundly influencing the future and fate of a country as well as people’s lives and wellbeing like it is doing today. Standing on the historic junction of the “two centennial” objectives of struggle, we deeply understand the ardent expectation of General Secretary Xi Jinping and the CPC Central Committee and deeply feel the epochal call for technological self-reliance. On the eve of the 5th national science and technology workers’ day, the 10th national congress of China Association for Science and Technology calls upon all sci-tech workers nationwide to take the action of “self reliance and innovation contest”.  

Be reasonable and more faithful, act diligently and advocate morality. Apprehend the power of faith from the centennial struggle of the Party, build up belief and confidence firmly, bear in mind original aspirations and mission and follow the Party steadfastly. Keep a foothold on the new development stage, implement new development ideas, construct new development patterns and integrate life ideals into the great cause of full-scale construction of a modern socialist country. 

Have the entire motherland in mind and serve the people. Have the “two overall concerns” in mind, keep “the best interests of the nation” in hearts, remain committed to patriotic struggle, act as the pacesetters for high-level technological self-reliance, construct a scientific and technological great wall of sustainable development and persistent security for the country and write wonderful chapters of constructing a world power of science and technology together. 

Innovate and create and bravely scale new heights.  Insist on “four orientations”, constantly march towards the breadth and depth of science and technology, explore “unchartered territory” of innovation bravely with a spirit of keeping up with the times, courage of constant updating and gritty willpower, and seize the commanding heights of key and core technologies. 

Take root in the earth and dedicate consciously. Practice the spirit of scientist, pursue rigorous scholarship, get involved wholeheartedly and strive to be makers of refreshing academic atmosphere and honest and clean work style. Work together to support growth of talented people of younger generations willingly. Proactively devote ourselves to volunteer service for science and technology, carry forward the scientific spirit, spread new scientific and technological knowledge, advocate scientific methods, help out on rural revitalization and write papers on the earth of the motherland. 

Face the world and pursue open cooperation. Deeply participate in the global science and technology governance, shape cultural ideas of using science and technology for greater good, and allow science and technology better enhance human wellbeing. Enhance openness, trust and cooperation to the international community of science and technology, and contribute wisdom and strength to construction of a human community with a shared future. 

The cause of independent innovation is promising, so are sci-tech workers. Let’s unite more closely around the CPC Central Committee centered on Xi Jinping, align all hearts and minds to the Party, pursue self reliance and work hard to make China a world power of science and technology and realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation!

Announcers of the call to action

Chen Wei, Vice Chairperson of the 10th National Congress of CAST, research fellow with the Academy of Military Sciences and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Has long been engaged in research of new-type vaccines for biological defense and new biological drugs, with outstanding contributions made in the fight against SARS, Ebola, COVID-19 and other major epidemic diseases. 

Xue Qikun, standing committee member of the 10th National Congress of CAST, President and Deputy Secretary of Party Committee of Southern University of Science and Technology, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Has long been engaged in quantum physics research and realized the “quantum anomalous Hall effect” for the first time in the world. 

Ye Cong: standing committee member of the 10th national congress of CAST and chief designer of deep-sea manned submersible. Led China’s deep-sea manned submersible sector to head for 10,000-meter-level abyss and made contributions to the deep-see equipment sector. 

Huang Caifa: Deputy Director of scientific research office and director of science and technology center of Xunwu Middle School of Jiangxi Province. Deeply rooted in the frontline of education and rural science popularization efforts, he helps more and more children love and learn science.  

Liu Ruopeng: standing committee member of the 10th national congress of CAST and President of Kuang-Chi Institute of Advanced Technology. The pioneer of metamaterial equipment technology, he persists in serving the motherland with science and technology and builds new-type scientific research institutes that link underlying scientific research with large-sized equipment application seamlessly. 

Liang Jianying: chief designer of the high-speed train CR400AF “Fuxing bullet train”. Led her team to tackle key technologies, thus making China the country with the highest commercial operation speed of high-speed trains in the world. 

Zhang Rongqiao: standing committee member of the 10th national congress of CAST and chief designer of China’s first Mars exploration mission program of the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, who led his team to successfully realize one mission for the first time in the world while completing Mars orbiting, landing and touring.  

Zhu Youyong: Honorary President of Yunnan Agricultural University and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Led farmers to embark on the road to getting out of poverty and getting rich through science and technology by means of science and technology demonstration for poverty relief, education and training, etc. 

Guo Suping: research fellow with Agricultural University of Hebei. Persists in alleviating poverty with science and technology and makes outstanding contributions to mountainous area development, ecological governance and targeted poverty alleviation with her husband Li Baoguo.  

Jin Xing: specially-engaged expert for the “HOME Program” of CAST, and president of Autorock. Dedicated to innovation and entrepreneurship after return to China by applying his research findings to industry development to solve core technological problems with automotive electronics and chips. 

Cui Shiping: President of The Association for Promotion of Science and Technology of Macau. Promotes scientific and technological innovation and industrialization development, and helps Macau teenagers get involved in the developmental upsurge of “mass entrepreneurship and innovation” across China. 

Qiao Jie: Vice Chairperson of the 10th National Congress of CAST, Executive Vice President of Peking University, President of Peking University Third Hospital and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Applied basic research findings to genetic diagnosis before clinical embryo implantation successfully.
