Beijing Widely-concerned Academic Achievements Symposium (Applied Math) held successfully at Nankai University

2021-06-25

In order to carry out the national strategy of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei integration initiative, advance the integrated and coordinated development of disciplinary exchanges on computational math and applied math among Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei and fully leverage the positive role of academic exchange in promoting original innovation and serving talent growth, at the afternoon of June 23, Beijing Widely-concerned Academic Achievements Symposium (Applied Math), co-sponsored by BAST, Tianjin Association for Science and Technology and Nankai University, took place at Chern Institute of Mathematics of Nankai University, marking the first time the symposium was held outside Beijing. Member of Leading Party Members’ Group and Vice President of BAST Meng Fanxing, Member of Leading Party Members’ Group and Vice President of TAST Lu Shuangying and standing committee member of Party Committee and Vice President of Nankai University Li Jing attended the symposium. The symposium was hosted by Xie Hehu, Secretary General of Beijing Society of Computational Mathematics.

Li Jing thanked in his speech for holding the academic symposium at Nankai University, saying that holding this event at Nankai University on the eve of the 110th anniversary of the birth of math master Mr. Chern Shing-shen is of particular significance and expecting us to contribute to the development of applied math in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region along the footsteps of the master.

Lu Shuangying said that this symposium is a new platform for academic exchange that was jointly created by BAST and TAST, as well as a new way to explore academic exchange. Academics rely on exchange, which in turn helps inspire innovation and shared development, as Beijing Widely-concerned Academic Achievements Symposium has become a famous, high-end brand of academic exchange over the past years. The presence of the symposium in Tianjin is very important to promoting the development of applied math in Tianjin and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei cooperation in the academic field.

Meng Fanxing stressed that academic exchange events are lifeline of scientific and technological innovation, excellent academic content is the cornerstone of exchange and the interactive form of exchange helps truly leverage the role of academic exchange. This symposium, held outside Beijing for the first time and held at a centennial university of Nankai, provided experts and scholars of computational math in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei with a platform for jointly exploring disciplinary frontiers and academic achievements, constituting a lively practice for carrying out the business-like academic idea, innovating in forms of academic exchange, serving sci-tech workers and disciplinary development and improving the quality of academic exchange. This is also an important event designed to carry out General Secretary Xi Jinping’s requirements for building a powerful nation of science and technology and realizing high-level technological self-reliance.

At the conference, BAST and TAST presented the “Certificate of Selection as Beijing Widely-Concerned Academic Achievements” to authors of “widely-concerned academic achievements”, thanking them for contributions made in the field of applied math.

At this symposium, associate professor of Tsinghua University Wu Hao, research fellow with the Institute of Applied Physics and Computational Mathematics Xu Xiaowen, both being authors of academic achievements, and specially-invited speakers, namely, specially-engaged researcher with Nankai University Hu Guanghui and lecturer of Hebei University of Technology Xu Mengwei, delivered academic reports titled “Optimum Transport, Machine Learning and Its Application”, “Challenges of Basic Algorithm of Supercomputing Application Software”, “Corner Scattering Theory and its Application in Inverse Scattering Problem” and “Non-smooth RCPLD and its Application in Two-tier Planning” respectively. Meanwhile, research fellow with IAPCM Gu Tongxiang, Prof. Huang Zhenghai from Tianjin University, Prof. Liu Xinwei from Hebei University of Technology, Prof. Wang Tongke from Tianjin Normal University, Prof. Yang Qingzhi from Nankai University and Prof. Zhang Shuhua from Tianjin University of Finance and Economics were invited to serve as discussing guests.

The symposium was in a heated vibe of exchanges, where in-depth exchanges and discussions took place between speakers, between discussing experts and speakers, between speakers and audience and between online sci-tech workers and speakers and experts. Participating experts all agreed that such academic exchange events and interactive forms of exchange online and offline that took place in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region brought inspirations to coordinated development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, talent cultivation and scientific and technological innovation. Events of such form will become a flag for academic exchanges in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

The symposium attracted participation and interaction of scientists and technologists from scientific research institutes and universities, broadcast live via the micro-blog account of “BAST Channel”, with nearly 0.50 million hits.
