2021 Sino-foreign teachers forum on science and technology education innovation held

 On May 23, the 2021 Sino-foreign teachers forum on science and technology education innovation (“Forum”) was held at Beijing Yuying School. Member of the Leading Party Members’ Group and Vice President of BAST Liu Xiaokan attended the forum and delivered a speech. Director of Beijing Youth Science and Technology Center and Secretary General of Beijing Association of Youth Science and Technology Education Zhang Xiaohu, deputy director of BYSTC Liu Ran, professor Wang Lei from Beijing Normal University, physics teaching researcher of Beijing Academy of Educational Sciences Zhang Yufeng, Principal of Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area Experimental School of the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China Wang Junkai and Principal of Beijing Yuying School Yu Huixiang attended the forum. Attended by over 200 experts, scholars and backbone teachers from many primary and middle schools, reserve personnel base schools, teaching research centers and teachers training colleges across the city, the forum was hosted by deputy director of Tsinghua University iCenter Hong Liang.

Under the theme “innovative talent cultivation based on scientific thoughts and methods”, the forum consisted of keynote reports, roundtable meeting and disciplinary thinking demonstration classes. Through collision of ideological sparks among experts and scholars on the scene, the forum was meant to jointly explore new paths to cultivation of innovative talents of science and technology who are primarily characterized by “scientific thoughts and methods”. 

During the main venue report, Wang Lei put forward a basic viewpoint that “scientific teaching oriented towards disciplinary thinking cultivation requires advancement and transformation from knowledge analytical teaching to cognitive developmental teaching”. He systematically analyzed the difference between knowledge analytical teaching and cognitive developmental teaching, expounded the development value of cognitive function and cognitive modes of knowledge as well as connotations and characteristics of cognitive developmental teaching, and brought forward key strategies for teaching design and implementation, etc.

Starting with the full perspective of course-teaching-evaluation, Zhang Yufeng explored cognitive mode teaching and learning evaluation content and strategy using physics as an example, illustrated how to examine the extent of mastery of ways of know physics using gaokao test questions, as well as provided specific learning suggestions about how teenage students learn to think like physicists.

Wang Junkai elaborated the challenges facing innovative talent cultivation in the new era, introduced the culture and philosophy of Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area Experimental School of the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China, and shared one or two teaching cases demonstrating how the school culture and philosophy guide the development of education and teaching.

Yu Huixiang expounded how to build platforms of shared growth for all students, promote the development of students’ interest and aspirations in science, increase scientific literacy and cultivate innovative talents in the school vibe of nine-year education system and 12-year integration under the theme “promoting the development of students’ interest and aspirations in science in an all-inclusive manner”.

In the subsequent roundtable meeting part of the forum, deputy direct of the course center of Beijing Academy of Educational Sciences Mr. Wang Kai, teaching researcher Li Junpeng from Beijing Haidian Teachers Training College, associate professor Zhang Jinbao from Beijing Normal University and hosts of master teachers studios in math, physics, chemistry, biology and computer sciences from Beijing Academy of Science Education Innovation were invited to jointly discuss and share their work experience in disciplinary thinking cultivation from the multiple perspectives of course, teaching, evaluation and management. Meanwhile, open classes of disciplinary thinking were held by master teachers’ studios of Beijing Academy of Science Education Innovation, where seed teachers from the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China and Beijing No. 2 Middle School lectured on disciplinary thinking courses such as physics, chemistry and biology to participating teachers, and shared their successful experience in practical classroom teaching, arousing strong repercussions among participating teachers. All participants said this forum provided a fresh perspective and rich resources that helped a lot with scientific literacy and teaching capability improvement, expecting to obtain expert reports and speech videos from the forum in order to facilitate continuous improvement and learning in the future.

This forum also invited two experts named Kyle Stirling and Klaus Peter Hopt from the US and Germany for exchange and sharing online.
